How long will my savings last?

Educational guide · Updated · About 7 min read

“How long will my savings last?” is a runway question: if you start with a balance and spend a fixed amount each month, when does the money run out?

Core idea

With no growth, duration in months is roughly balance ÷ monthly withdrawal. With growth, each month can add a small return before the withdrawal, which can stretch the runway—or, if growth covers the withdrawal, the model never depletes under constant rates.
