How overtime pay is calculated

Educational guide · Updated · About 8 min read

Overtime pay math is multiplication: you need a rate, how many hours are regular, how many are paid at a higher multiplier, and what that multiplier is.

Core formulas

  • Regular pay = rate × regular hours
  • OT pay = rate × OT multiplier × OT hours
  • Double-time pay = rate × DT multiplier × DT hours
  • Total = regular + OT + double-time

Sample week (not an offer)

$20.00/hour · 40 regular · 10 OT at 1.5× → regular $800.00, OT $300.00, total $1,100.00. Open in calculator · Full example page
