How the paycheck calculator works

Clear arithmetic for learning—not IRS tables or payroll software.

Tool: Paycheck calculator · Embed · All how-we-calculate pages · Questions

Purpose

Estimate gross pay per paycheck and a rough take-home amount using a tax percent you type. For education only—not a W-2, pay stub, or tax return.

Gross pay

  • Annual mode: annual salary you enter
  • Hourly mode: hourly rate × hours/week × weeks/year
  • Gross per check = annual gross ÷ periods per year
  • Weekly 52 · Biweekly 26 · Semi-monthly 24 · Monthly 12

Take-home path (model)

  1. Start with gross per check
  2. Subtract pre-tax deduction $ (capped at gross)
  3. Apply tax % to remaining “taxable” amount in the model
  4. Subtract post-tax deduction $
  5. Remainder = estimated net per check

What we intentionally leave out

  • Automatic IRS Publication 15-T wage-bracket or percentage methods
  • State or local tax tables by ZIP code
  • FICA/Medicare as separate fixed statutes (you may fold them into your combined %)
  • W-4 steps, multiple jobs, or year-to-date reconciliation
  • Employer benefits eligibility or legal advice

Official federal context

Employers use methods in IRS Publication 15-T for federal income tax withholding. Nestfigure does not implement those tables.
