How the tip calculator works
Clear percent math for learning—not a tipping requirement.
Tool: Tip calculator · Embed · All how-we-calculate pages · Questions
Purpose
Estimate a tip amount, grand total, and equal split from a bill amount and tip percent. Educational only.
Formulas
- Pretax subtotal = max(0, bill − tax) when tax is entered (tax is capped at the bill amount)
- Tip base = pretax subtotal if “tip on pretax” is on and tax > 0; otherwise tip base = bill amount
- Tip amount = tip base × (tip% ÷ 100)
- Total with tip = bill + tip amount
- Per person = total with tip ÷ split count (split count at least 1)
- Tip per person = tip amount ÷ split count
What we intentionally leave out
- Automatic gratuity / service charge detection on a real check
- Uneven itemized splits (some people order more)
- Cash vs card rounding quirks and platform fee rules
- Legal minimum tip rules or advice on how much you “should” tip
- Live tax rates by city or state
